Even with their physically demanding world, steroids have found a way to boost their performance in training and enhance their performance in their respective sports. History of the Olympic Games could attest that even Olympic Athletes used steroids to deliver exceptional performance. Even in the recently staged editions of the Olympic Games, there had been athletes who resorted to steroid use to boost their performance, even if it meant stripping them off of their medals after investigations.

Steroids may also come as a form of cream that is rubbed directly on the user’s skin.

  • In 1975, the International Olympic Committee banned the use of steroids in the Olympic Games due to athletes’ abuse and death.
  • 1988 there was a federal regulation that stiffened penalties for the sale and possession of steroids.
  • In 1990, it was placed under controlled substances schedule III. These drugs are considered to contribute to misuse, overuse, and abuse.
  • Under the Steroid Control Act of 1990, any act, which includes use, distribution of, or manufacture of anabolic androgenic steroids for non – medical purposes is incriminating.

Do Steroids Cause Addiction?

If a user opts to stop using, he or she can experience withdrawal symptoms, which are linked to addiction. Symptoms include mood swings, restlessness, insomnia, reduced sex drive, the crave to take more steroids, and depression. However, evidences for steroid addiction do not suggest significant resemblance to those who get addicted to cocaine or any other addictive drugs. Users tend to develop tolerance and dependence.

  • Users feel good about themselves as a result of anabolic steroids.
  • Extreme mood swings can occur.
